What is the difference between CBD and THC?

Cannabis plants produce thousands of compounds but the most well recognized belong to a class called cannabinoids. There are several cannabinoids but the two that are most well-known among consumers are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC is the compound that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties.

Can veterinarians
prescribe CBD?

Unfortunately, many of the state Veterinary Boards are behind the times.  The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has not given veterinarians the authority to possess, administer, dispense, or prescribe cannabis or cannabinoid products. Therefore, under Federal Law, veterinarians are prohibited from engaging in such activity. In some states it is forbidden to be spoken of!  Including
even California right now.
If your veterinarian cannot answer your CBD questions, the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA) would be a good place to find a holistically-minded veterinarian and to begin a conversation.

There are dosing charts available with the product. You need to pay attention to the mg per ml and dosing depends on your dogs conditon and size.  We can help you with more specific dosing information if you contact us.

What does CBD do?
The cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid receptors in the body (in the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system) and modulate things like pain, anxiety, and nausea.

Cannabidiol: A new option for pets in pain?

Does CBD make you  “high”?
In short, no, you or your dog won’t
get “high” from CBD oil.

CBD isn't known to cause psychoactive effects, like THC.  It is completely different strain of plant.   CBD oils come from
hemp, not marijuana.

What are the risks?

Medical cannabis CBD has no life-threatening side effects with proper dosage. Potential side effects based on how CDB affects humans include dry mouth, lowered blood pressure, and drowsiness.

The ingestion of marijuana plants (including edibles) can be life threatening for pets. These are the plants that contain THC. If your dog has eaten marijuana, you should call your veterinarian or Animal Poison Control IMMEDIATELY
 * CBD oil and treats are hemp based
and do not contain THC.

What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring NON-intoxicating cannabinoid, or chemical compound, found in cannabis and hemp plants. CBD oil is concentrated liquid extract of the marijuana plant, cannabis sativa.

What conditions are commonly treated with CBD ?

Pets can experience situational and behavioral anxiety. Situational anxiety can arise from things such as meeting new people, lightning/thunderstorms, fireworks, and travel. CBD is helpful in aiding situational anxiety because of its calming properties.

A more serious condition, behavior anxiety requires professional assessment from your vet and perhaps training support in conjunction with CBD.  Conditions that CBD alone will not "fix".

CBD oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory that works to reduce pain-related symptoms by:

Reducing the pain that arises from

• reducing nerve-related pain
• lessening neuropathy pain
• decreasing intestinal inflammation

CBD oil for seizures and epilepsy has proven effective in humans and studies now show that CBD oil is also effective for treating dogs with epilepsy. Several veterinarians led by neurologist Dr. Stephanie McGrath are doing major studies on CBD and its efficacy to treat epilepsy and osteoarthritis in dogs. While the first trials were small, McGrath saw promising results and immediately pushed for further studies. One of the results from the study showed a successful reduction in the number of seizures with the administration of CBD oil —  one dog, Ferguson, saw his 2-3 seizures a day reduce to only 2-3 a week. McGrath is wrapping up her second major trial this time and has hinted her results are very promising.

CBD has long been proven to have anti-cancer and tumor-reducing effects, according to research at the University of Milan and several other studies. Some studies have pointed to the possibility that CBD may affect cancer genes by shutting down cancer cellular growth receptors.

A 2016 survey published the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association found that of nearly 650 people surveyed, 72% reported having used a hemp-based cannabis product for their dog and 64% of those surveyed felt that it helped them.
With no side effects.

The effective use of CBD oil with dogs suffering from nausea can be explained through the ability of CBD to produce its anti-emetic or the anti-nausea effects. This is through indirectly activating the somatodendritic auto receptors.

When a dog experiences motion sickness from traveling or from illness,  they can benefit from CBD oil as a remedy.
Additionally, CBD may help with digestion. As dogs age or overcome an illness, their appetites and digestive health often decline. CBD oil may help increase your pet’s appetite, while helping with nausea.
